What is the most sustainable form of packaging? Compostable packaging - explained
Thanks to its convenience and low pricing, plastic has become part of our everyday lives. But it has also contributed to massive pollution set to worsen with time, making it one of the most crucial environmental issues of today. Did you know that:
- We generate about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with 60% ending up in our natural environment?
- 100,000 animals die from plastic entanglement each year thanks to plastic bottles, containers, and fishing equipment being dumped into our oceans?
- The COVID-10 pandemic has boosted our oceans’ plastic pollution by 25,900 tonnes thanks to single-use face masks, plastic bottles of disinfectant, food-takeaway packaging, etc?
So, how do we save our planet?
We believe compostable packaging is the answer, which is why our company Compostable was started. Founded by MBA Green, a sustainable packaging provider for food and non- food industries with over 10 years’ experience, Compostable takes the fight for a greener planet to the next level by advocating for a cleaner, more environmentally friendly future to protect our planet, its valuable resources, and its inhabitants. And we are doing that via our line of compostable packaging products to help reduce our impact on the environment.
Although operating along with MBA Green, Compostable is its own unique brand with its own website (http://compostable.world/) that showcases its various eco friendly products, how they differ from normal plastics, and how they can help to combat pollution.
Our Compostable products
At Compostable, we create products that are 100% organic, making them completely biodegradable, compostable, and soil-fertilising that are fully compliant with EU Standards. Produced using renewable resources (like potato peels and vegetable starch), Compostable’s products reduce our carbon footprint significantly.
How?
We use carbohydrate-rich plants (known as food crops or first-generation feedstock) to create our eco friendly packaging. Since first-generation feedstock requires the least amount of grow area yet still generates the highest yields, it’s regarded as the most efficient option.
This falls perfectly in line with our brand values which includes a consistent quality of finished products, a guaranteed and certified origin of raw materials, competitive pricing, regular and punctual deliveries, etc.
From pollution to composting
Our compostable packaging can be composted in a commercial composter and under normal environmental conditions (90-180 days in an organic environment). After usage, it simply gets added to the soil and becomes a natural component of the environmental life cycle.
EU Regulations
Plastic shopping bags with a wall thickness below 50 microns (regarded as “thin plastic shopping bags”) are prohibited in Europe since they are one of the top 10 littered items. Used (mostly) only once, these plastic bags take centuries to fully degrade in nature. They are also often ingested by terrestrial- or marine animals or break up into microplastics – either way, plastic gets into both the human- and animal food chain.
Boosting the potential and popularity of our eco friendly packaging even more is the fact that only 100% biodegradable and compostable packages manufactured from renewable polymer (PLA) and labelled with strictly regulated certificates are exempt from product (eco) tax.
Inclusion of the Seedling logo
The Seedling logo, a registered trademark of European Bioplastics, certifies that a product is industrially compostable according to European Standards. If the product has been correctly certified, it will biodegrade successfully in an industrial composting plant under carefully controlled parameters such as temperature, moisture, and time range.
It is pertinent that the Seedling logo is always used on a product (along with its valid registration number) to show that it’s compostable packaging and, thus, is 100% environmentally friendly.
Retail service products
Our compostable bags, created from compostable materials, are strong enough for multiple uses and can be used to collect and dispose of organic waste. In terms of load capacity and tearing resistance, they are similar to standard “single-use” plastic bags, making them ideal for packing fruits and vegetables. And since they are solid and stretchy, they help to preserve product freshness while reducing food waste.
Complying with the required regulations, our bags completely break down in water. Thus, for printing, solvent-based or water-based printing inks can be used.
For customer convenience, we also offer a rich range of styles, sizes, and thicknesses, plus high-level printing options with a maximum of 6 colours (using organic- and compostable inks), to meet any brand’s requirements.
Industrial service products
Our compostable packaging products are also perfect for your industrial business’s needs, such as compostable foils and biodegradable film for vacuum-packed food in numerous shapes and sizes.
Sustainable packaging for waste management
Although thin, our Biocartene®-based biodegradable garbage bags are exceptionally strong and water-resistant. For convenience, customers can choose between kinds that can be composted at home or in industrial settings, both of which are completely decomposed into water, CO2, and biomass in industrial composting operations or domestic garden composts.
Ideal for dog droppings
Our sanity bags for dog droppings (which meet EU Standards and are made from potato starch using patented BIOCARTENE® technology) are also completely biodegradable and compostable in addition to being easy to open, impermeable and resilient.
Conclusion
Since we at Compostable believe that compostable packaging is the future to a greener and healthier planet, we (along with MBA Green) are continuously searching for new and cost-effective solutions so that our clients can also progress from regular packaging to eco-friendly packaging. Thus, you have the peace of mind of knowing that you are working with a green company with a worldwide presence that takes sustainable packaging to a whole new level.
